MAYBE3
VILÁGOK VÉGE

2012. 09. 15-10. 14.
MAGMA Kortárs Művészeti Kiállítótér
Sepsiszentgyörgy, Szabadság tér 2., Kovászna megye, Románia

5 év elteltével, harmadik alkalommal kerül megszervezésre a MAYBE kiállítás VILÁGOK VÉGE címszó alatt, amelynek a nevét a 2012-es év végére beharangozott világ vége adta. Megnyitó a vég előtt a lehetséges végről (maybe).

E külön világok horizontjai a megértésben egymást kölcsönösen határolják.

MAYBE 3
END OF THE WORLDS

15. 09-04. 10. 2012.
MAGMA Contemporary Art Space
Saint George, Freedom Square nr. 2., Covasna County, Romania

After five more years the MAYBE exhibition is organized for the third time, this time with the theme END OF THE WORLDS, which was suggested by the doomsday prophecies set out for the end of 2012. Exhibition opening before the end about the possible end (maybe).

This theme does not simply involve the thought of the apocalypse, but rather the decline of other „worlds”, of values, just the same as those which replace these failing worlds. The industrial revolution first, then the information and IT revolution again put these so called universal values on a more and yet more slippery slope. The ensuing global crises are a good starting point in searching for new or well trodden paths for a solution.

As with the preceding MAYBE exhibitions, plans are carefully laid out for a series of lectures on the mentioned subjects.

Doomsday(s) Tamed: Digital Apocalyptic

The end of the world, the last things are the topics of eschatology and apocalyptic. Alarming, sinister, menacing, consoling visions. Boisterous shuddering. Shaking works. Help cry of the desperate, revolutionary restauration. Even today?

IVÁCSON András Áron
Two methods of integrating the apocalypse into the exercise of power

Doomsday predictions have always been a rich soil for all kinds of control mechan- isms apllied by power: the more you can make people believe that the end is near, the more you can keep them in check and control them. One good example of this is the variety of end or the world cults – christianity has been waiting for the end for over 2000 years now, not to mention that it’s first disciples believed that it will come in their lifetime, compared to which we really got off easy so far –, another one being the „end of society”-thumping states violating the private sphere of their citizens, which can be exemplified by the mass hysteria after 9/11.

Worlds and the world

It is obvious for any of us that the world exists as a "universal field" of things, as a sum of spatio-temporal processes. However, the diversity of the ways in which it arises as the subject of our knowledge and empirical experience is not so evident.

The process of creating a common worldview starts from the contiguous "separate worlds", while the horizons of these separate worlds are mutually bounded within the process of understanding.

End of Worlds,
or Alternative Life Spaces and the Concepts of the End in Art

The world, this admirably rich and varied universe and “our world” within: this planet with an exceptional living environment, the home of our diverse human community, is unavoidably unique, just as the peculiar life-communities of human cultures and the “personal worlds” of each individuals’ private lives. This encompasses all which not only exists, but also lives and interacts with itself and with its environment, strives to survive and to evolve, being, at the same time, all that is worth living with and for. In this context to speak about the end of the world, to envisage it on grounds of some kind of intuition, knowledge or revelation, to ponder the possibility of “the end of ends”, to risk it by ambition, action or just carelessness seems to be the proof of an unprecedented insolence, as it threatens us with the final senselessness or with the temptation of the meaninglessness of the whole. Of course, this has not always been so. There were times when the possibility of the end was considered as not being senseless at all, what is more, as being the carrier of the ultimate sense, since perishing is the essential condition of the constant rebirth of life, or – in another approach – the fulfilment of the old promise, the preludium of the final judgement separating the true ones and the sinners, judging each of them according to their merits.
Still, it is not unexplicable at all that today we often toy with the very possibility every sane person hopes to get away with, namely the possibility of the end, and at the same time we try to turn it to our advantage, to make it meaningful. This becomes possible only if we bethink, substantiate in a logical manner and at the same time maybe also believe that the sphere of possibilites is richer than the reality and we wish to preserve exactly this, the possibility of possibilities, even by actualizing the ultimate possibility, the end of all possibilities, as one, although not strictly necessary – thus avoidable – possibility. This is like the “assuming the impossible” of medieval logic: “assuming, but not admitting”, which posits, implicitly in its formulation, the omnipotence of reason in a way in which this omnipotence is confirmed by the very impossibility of the impossible assumption, though it is aware – it must be aware – of the fact that reason does not have power over absurdity. The absurdity – as we know since Tertullian – belongs to the realm of faith, as only faith can offer guidance in what is impossible to admit and to think over: it must be believed or rejected. However, modern thinking, that is, the thought formulated from the viewpoint of subjective experience and finite existence fails to cope with the absurdities requiring faith, as in this way of thinking the longing for the incomprehensible eternity has been replaced with the longing for reason, and thus the unforeseeable and “silent” infinity of the world is as unbearable for it as the senselessness of finite existence (Pascal).
However, as long as the starting point is not the all-comprising (incomprehensible) unity, but consistently the certainty of the intentional experience – as in phenomenology –, the world becomes the mere background of existence, “life-world”, “surrounding world”, whose “natural” feature, confronted with reason, loses its unproblematic character, and becomes conceivable as a scientific or philosophical construct. On the one hand, the world understood as the totality of beings “falls apart” into the micro-worlds of individual lives and life-communities, on the other hand, however, it is accounted for as the mere opposite of spiritually posited worlds being formed in them (G. Figal). Such worlds are, for instance, the “sacred world” of religious life, the “world” represented in artworks, the “scientific world” described in logical forms and explanatory theories, or the “technical world” containing these as functioning principles but interpreted only in instrumental terms, as serving human needs. At the same time, according to the mentioned opposition, everything that constituts our experience in sacred, artistic, scientific or technical terms, does not only refer to the world of the totality of human goals, that of culture and civilization, but also to a general correlation of beings, also to the “world” as its own opposite. This somewhat complex situation bears particular difficulties for understanding. The world is empirically accessible for different people and groups through different habitualized modalities, however, the configuration of a common world everybody takes place starting from “separate worlds” getting in touch with each other. Among others, the very clear acceptance and systematic problematization of these difficulties – or, on the contrary, their naïve and unproblematic treatment – distinguishes between the “philosophical attitude” and the “natural attitude” of everyday and scientific thinking.
The “fragmentariness” of the comprehension of the world constitutes the starting point of diverse sense- and validity-formations. We distinguish not only between objects and object complexes, between ourselves and others, between the experience of our culture and that of other cultures with the intent of delimitation or even bridging, but also between different kinds of validity (life fact, possibility, appearance) and modes of approach (experience, assumption, imagination, as well as the time modes connected to them: it is here, it was here, it will be here) (Husserl). Therefore, the established,  imagined or assumed end of world or of the worlds, or maybe of only certain worlds (world views) means radically different things. Similarly, coping with the thought of the end of the world imposes different tasks for religion, science and art respectively, though they may reflect on each other’s concepts of the end of the world from their own standpoint.
In the approach according to which the world can be grasped in the “life-worlds” and starting from the multitude of individual worlds, art can no longer be regarded as offering an obvious, unified viewpoint. This is so even when, as opposed to other cultural domains, sometimes the matter of discussion is the “world of art”, which is specifically distinct from the world of everyday things and objects. However, it is also valid for this “particular world” (art) that it can be grasped only starting from the individual artworks and their characteristics. This means – as we can see at Heidegger – that the special existence of the artwork must be conceived starting from its artwork-likeness (created existence), that is, from its specificity that “in it the truth of being is unveiled”. However, to speak about the truth of being raises again the question of the world, but this time from a viewpoint that art makes possible. The artwork “unveils a world” – Heidegger states –, however, it is not the world of facts or things and not even only an imagined framework adjusted to this world, but the condition of understanding, as long as for us while ex-sisting in the openness of being things acquire their features in the opening up of the world, in correlation with spaciousness and confinedness. The artwork makes possible this very event, namely the manifestation of the things in a world, by freeing (and arranging) the space in front of openness. It does not only open up (set up) a world, the totality of possibilities not existing before, but it also “holds open its openness” and “raises to the openness of the world of art” the material of the artwork, the carrier of its representation, in a way that it can manifest and fulfil its task: it becomes the artwork’s own. Such material aspects are involved here, to quote Heidegger’s example of the Greek temple, as “the block or the texture of the stone, the elm-like flexibility of the wood, the cold light of metal, the colour and discoloration of paint”. Each contributes to the realization of the existence of truth (“the unconcealment of being as being”) as artwork.
How does this all appear in the artworks of the exhibition of the Magma Contemporary Art Exhibition Space and the Maybe series of exhibitions, entitled End of Worlds, in the artistic representations of alternative life spaces and concepts of the end? First of all, diverse reflections on the end of the world adapted to various “worlds”, artistic and technical representations are displayed, expressing attitudes ranging from the melancholic (the rather everyday images of the final day – Ferenc Wanek: The Images of the Final Day), through the cynical (the Coke-can-shaped “eternal” sanctuary lamp – Monotremu: Coke Candle), to the different versions of the ironical (the “socialist spirit of work” left an incurable trace on the landscape  – Levente Kozma: Spirit of Work; the series of explosions further destroying systematically also the lifeless landscape – Monotremu: Fireworks, or the light generated by the recipient and flashing and extinguishing depending on his/her presence – Attila Kispál: Untitled), and the sarcastic (the gesture preserving the packed single – Domokos Váncsa: Fart; or respectively, to the evolution history combining the concepts of the cosmic beginning and end with mythical blasphemy – András Áron Ivácsony and Mátyás Sárosi: Dead Planets). The manifold meaning of the “world”, of “worlds” and the evocation of the end in countless forms are combined here with the various ways of expression of fine arts and media art. Among them, we can find photographic prints, animation sequences, digital prints, video works, traditional and video installations. Besides the conceptual-thematic and expressive diversity, the strongest aspect of the exhibition is humour, which is sometimes the carrier of ambivalent, extreme connotations, such as the idea of greeting the people going to work at dawn with fireworks and greetings announced on the loudspeaker in place of the lost esteem of work and the workers – Péter Szabó: Good Morning; the heart-shaped explosion cloud – István László: We’ll meet again; or the pattern, reminding of the mandala, of the Tirthankars (the 24 perfect wise men of Jainism), which includes, as part of the eternal recurrence of the end, the creator’s destructive gesture – Rareş Moldovan: Tirthankar; similarly to the gesture of defacement of the artist moulding a statue “in his own image” – István László: Self-Portrait. In other cases, in connection with the solidity or fragility of the micro- and macro structures making up the world, the end of the world is evoked in the drawings between the overlapping wall layers of the old and the new world, or in the perspective of the lifeless spatial structure of the grotesquely assembled, inorganically fitting branches.
Finally, the question arises: what constitutes, in the case of the artworks mentioned here, the material of the artwork, the carrier of its representation, which the artwork “raises into the openness of its world”? In conclusion, we can say that it is not only the visual and objectual elements carrying the spectacle, what is more, not only the spectacle of the joint existence of the scattered things, but also the way of thinking characteristic of the artworks, the awareness of the “constellations” of beings, determined in a particular way, that the spectacle borrows its own essence (meaning) from.
The tragedy-free and ironic diversity of the concepts of the end proves that the world view of today’s art is not naïvely optimistic or fatalistic, but self-consciously contingent, sometimes playful, showing light-heartedness, sometimes rather melancholic-nostalgic, opening up to the existential possibilities that man faces, but keeping an ironic distance from despair.
